Medical Acupuncture

Dr. Barton Perry received training in medical acupuncture through the UCLA Deptartment of Family Medicine in 1995. Although there are many types of acupuncture treatment modalities, Dr. Barton relies predominately on a technique called PENS (Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). This process is similar to TENS unit treatments except that needles are inserted 1/2" - 1" below the skin surface in the main acupunture points within the area of treatment, and electrical stimulation is applied at various frequencies. It is felt that by stimulating certain nerves at their junction within the muscle, "pain" nerves can be blocked. Most common conditions treated with this method include: neck and back pains (both chronic and acute), heel spurs, TMJ, headaches, carpal tunnel, neuropathy and joint pains/arthralgias. It can be a very helpful adjunct, if not alternative, to pain and arthritis medications, epidurals, and in patients who would like to postpone elective surgery.
